A viral social media post sparked a very important PSA about service dogs and what to do if one approaches you.
Melissa Hope (@lissalet on twitter) shared a note to educate people about service dogs after a woman fell down and the woman’s service dog ran to an adult for help.
In her post it explained a service dog assumed their owner was suffering a seizure when they fell down and went to an adult for help but the adult he was trying to summon was “swatting him away and telling him to go away.”
Thankfully this wasn’t an emergency and a lot of people online decided to share this PSA because they had no idea that’s what a service dog would do if it was.
The very important line in this story is, “If a service dog without a person approaches you, it means the person is down and in need of help.” And “Don’t get scared, don’t get annoyed, follow the dog!”
