Cornwall Community Museum Continues Celebrating 70 Years of History
It has been a busy and exciting summer for the SD&G Historical Society and the Cornwall Community Museum as they mark the Museum’s 70th anniversary.
From a lively Sock Hop Dance in June to a Kite-Flying event and a Plein Air Artists’ Day in July, the Society and Museum have found creative ways to celebrate seven decades of preserving and sharing the history of Cornwall and Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.
The celebrations continue throughout September with two special events that will offer the community even more opportunities to take part.
Commemorating the Museum’s Official Opening
On September 20, past and present Society members, along with invited guests, will gather to commemorate the official opening of the Museum in 1956.
The Museum first opened its doors on September 15, 1956, on Second Street West, across from what was then the Howard Smith Paper Mills—later known as Domtar. In 2000, as one of Cornwall’s Millennium projects, the Museum moved to its current home in Lamoureux Park.
This September gathering will recognize that important milestone and honour the many people who have helped the Museum preserve Cornwall’s stories for generations.
Heritage Market and Vintage Car Show
A week later, on September 26, the Museum will host the final official anniversary event: a Heritage Market and vintage car show.
The Heritage Market will feature vendors offering historic articles and collectibles, along with artisans who create heritage-inspired items. For a shopping experience with a unique connection to the past, this is an event worth adding to your calendar.
The Cornwall Olde Car Club will also join the celebration with a spectacular display of vintage automobiles in the park, just west of the Museum. Visitors can enjoy an impressive lineup of classic cars while celebrating the people, places and memories that have shaped the community.
Celebrate the Past All Year Long
With Christmas and the holiday season approaching, the Museum’s 70th Anniversary calendar makes a meaningful gift or keepsake. The calendar features photographs of Cornwall during the 1950s—the decade when the Museum first opened.
Calendars will be available for purchase at the Museum, through the Museum’s website and at selected locations throughout the city. Whether you are shopping for someone who grew up during that era, sending a gift to family members living elsewhere or simply curious about life in Cornwall in the 1950s, the calendar offers a nostalgic way to look back while keeping track of the year ahead.
You do not need to wait for a special event to visit the Museum and explore Cornwall’s storied past. The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday year-round.
